How to Share Files with a Password and Expiration Date

Filewisp Team·September 17, 2026·2 min read

TL;DR — Use password protection and expiration dates to make shared file access more deliberate, temporary, and easier to manage.

A share link is convenient, but convenience should not mean indefinite access. For sensitive project files, combine a password with an expiration date and send the two pieces of information through separate channels.

Why use both controls

An expiration date limits how long a link is useful. A password adds another requirement beyond possession of the URL. Neither control replaces a complete security policy, but together they reduce common accidental-exposure scenarios.

A safer sharing workflow

Use the password-protected file sharing workflow in Filewisp:

  1. Select the file you need to share.
  2. Enable password protection.
  3. Set an expiration date based on the project or handoff deadline.
  4. Send the link to the recipient.
  5. Send the password through another channel.
  6. Revoke the share when access is no longer needed.

Avoid sending the link and password in the same message for sensitive material. Also avoid reusing passwords across unrelated shares.

Choose an expiration that matches the work

Use a short expiration for one-time transfers, a longer one for an active project, and no open-ended access when the recipient only needs the file for a defined task. If the deadline changes, update the share rather than forwarding a new uncontrolled attachment.

What this does not mean

Password protection is an access-control feature. It should not be described as zero-knowledge encryption or as a replacement for encryption at rest, transport security, identity controls, and careful credential handling.

Filewisp keeps the practical controls visible so you can make a deliberate decision for each share. Read more about secure file sharing for the complete workflow.
